How Judges Decide Debate Rounds

Judges do not tally arguments — they weigh them. Understanding how that weighing works is the fastest way to stop winning on the flow and losing on the ballot.

Claim, warrant, impact

A complete argument has three parts: a claim (what’s true), a warrant (why it’s true), and an impact (why it matters).

A claim asserted with no warrant is much weaker than one that’s actually explained — treat them differently even if both go technically "unanswered."

Weighing mechanisms

When both sides have valid impacts, standard lenses for comparing them include: magnitude (how big), probability (how likely), timeframe (how soon), reversibility (can the harm be undone), and scope (how many affected).

Debaters who explicitly weigh their impact against the other side’s using these lenses should be rewarded for doing your job for you — that’s good debating.

Evidence quality

Not all evidence is equal — consider source credibility, recency, and whether it’s actually on point for the claim it’s attached to.

Simply naming a source ("studies show...") is weaker than a source that’s explained and applied to the specific argument.

Dropped arguments, weighed honestly

Treat unaddressed arguments as conceded — but weigh how important the dropped argument actually was, not just the fact that it was dropped.

Don’t supply your own warrant for a claim a debater never explained, even if you personally find it plausible. That’s intervention.

The five weighing mechanisms, on one motion

Every example below weighs the same motion — MSPDP — "This House would ban homework for elementary school students" (Proposition) — so you can see one round argued five different ways rather than five unrelated topics.

Magnitude — How Many, How Much

Compare how far each side's impact reaches and how hard it hits. Strong magnitude weighing says both impacts out loud and explains why yours is bigger — don't just assert that it is.

Name the metric

Let's weigh this round on magnitude — how many students each side's impact reaches, and how hard it hits each one of them.

Concede their best point

We'll grant the opposition their strongest argument outright: some students genuinely do learn from practicing at home, and for those students, homework helps.

Size their impact honestly

But look at who those students actually are. Their own example was a child with a quiet room, a free evening, and a parent available to explain a problem. That is a real group, and it is a small one.

Size your impact

Ours is every other child in that classroom — the one doing worksheets at a kitchen table with three younger siblings, the one whose parents work a night shift, the one who simply has nobody at home who can help with fractions. For them, homework doesn't teach the material. It just marks who has help and who doesn't, every single night.

Make the comparison explicit

So here is the trade you're being asked to make: a modest gain for the students who were already doing fine, against a daily, compounding disadvantage for the students who weren't.

Say why the metric decides it

And magnitude has to decide this round, because a homework policy isn't something a family opts into. It lands on every child in that building at once, so it should be judged by what it does to all of them — not by what it does to the handful it happens to suit.

Give the ballot

When you weigh how far each impact reaches, the Proposition wins this round.

Probability — What Actually Happens

Show why your impact is more likely to actually happen. The strongest version counts the assumptions each side needs and shows that yours needs fewer.

Name the metric

Before you weigh how big anything is, weigh how likely it is to happen at all — because an impact that never arrives is worth nothing to a real student.

Show your chain is short

Our impact needs exactly one thing to be true: if you take two hours of assigned work out of a nine-year-old's evening, that child gets two hours back. That isn't a forecast. That's arithmetic.

Count their assumptions

Now count what the opposition's impact needs. The homework has to be assigned. It then has to actually be attempted. It has to be attempted without a parent quietly doing half of it. And whatever's learned has to still be there months later, when it finally shows up on a test.

Break the weakest link

That's four separate things going right, and their own second speaker conceded the second one — they told you roughly a third of students don't finish it. So for a third of that classroom, their chain snaps before we've argued anything else.

Bring in the real world

And we already know what a homework-free evening looks like, because it happens every Saturday. Children sleep longer, families eat together, and no school has collapsed as a result.

Give the ballot

Weigh the impact that's close to certain against the one that needs four things to go right, and this round is Proposition's.

Timeframe — What Happens First

Explain why your impact lands sooner. A harm happening now usually outweighs a benefit years away — but say why the waiting itself matters, not just that it exists.

Name the metric

The next thing to weigh is timeframe — not just how big each impact is, but when it actually shows up.

Your impact is immediate

Ours arrives in week one. The first Monday after this policy passes, a child finishes school at three and the evening belongs to them again. They sleep longer that night. They eat dinner with their family that night. Nothing has to accumulate or develop — the benefit is simply there.

Name their timeframe in their words

The opposition's benefit, on their own case, is study habits that pay off in middle school. That's their framing, not ours. They are asking a nine-year-old to be exhausted now in exchange for being organized at fifteen.

Explain why the gap matters

Six years is a long time to hold a promise open. In that time the child changes schools, changes teachers, and runs into a completely different homework policy anyway. Their impact has to survive all of that to ever be collected. Ours doesn't have to survive anything.

Point at the cost of waiting

And the waiting isn't free. Every semester we delay is another semester of late nights and Sunday dread for children who never got a say in any of it. You can't hand that time back afterwards.

Give the ballot

When one impact arrives on Monday and the other might arrive in six years, weigh the one that is actually real. Vote Proposition.

Reversibility — Can It Be Undone

Show that your side's mistake could be undone and theirs couldn't. The clearest version asks what happens to a real person if each side turns out to be wrong.

Name the metric

The last thing we'd ask you to weigh is reversibility — which side's mistake you could actually undo.

Set up the test

Neither team is going to convince you they're certainly right tonight. So the fair question isn't who's certain. It's what happens to a real child if each of us turns out to be wrong.

If we are wrong

Say we're wrong, and it turns out these students really did need nightly practice. What happens? Scores dip for a semester, a principal notices, and homework comes back in the fall. That is the entire cost of our mistake: one semester, and a policy reversed by exactly the people who set it.

If they are wrong

Now say they're wrong. Say the homework stays, and the lost sleep and the stress we've described tonight are real. Those children do not get a corrected version of fourth grade. You cannot give a ten-year-old back the evenings they spent crying over a worksheet, or the sleep they didn't get, or a relationship with math they decided at nine was not for them.

Draw the asymmetry

So the two mistakes are not the same size. One costs a semester of test scores. The other costs a piece of a childhood, and it is not refundable.

Give the ballot

When one side's error can be reversed in a semester and the other side's can't be reversed at all, you vote for the reversible one. That's the Proposition.

Cost-Benefit — Weigh the Trade-off

Put your biggest benefit against their biggest cost and show why yours still wins. Don't skip past their cost — name it, take it seriously, then show the balance still favors you.

Name the metric

Finally, weigh this round on straight cost and benefit — everything we gain against everything the opposition says we give up.

State their cost fairly

Their cost is real, and we're not going to pretend otherwise. Some students will get less repetition of what they covered that day, and for something like times tables, repetition genuinely does help.

Mitigate it

But look at what we actually proposed, because it doesn't leave that gap open. Our model redirects the hours teachers currently spend grading homework into fifteen extra minutes of guided practice in class — supervised, with a teacher in the room, for every child instead of only the ones with help at home. The repetition doesn't disappear. It moves somewhere it works better.

State your benefit

Against that, put what we gain: children who sleep, families who get their evenings back, and a classroom where the gap between the student with a tutor and the student without one stops widening a little more every night.

Do the balance out loud

So the honest ledger reads like this. They lose a marginal amount of unsupervised repetition, most of which we've already replaced with something better. We gain rest, family time, and a fairer classroom. That is not a close trade.

Give the ballot

Weigh the whole round, costs and benefits together, and the Proposition leaves those students better off. That is your ballot.

What is weighing in debate?

Weighing is explicitly comparing your impacts against your opponents’ instead of just restating your own. Strong weighing names both impacts out loud and explains why yours decides the round — by magnitude, probability, timeframe, reversibility, or cost against benefit.

What are the main weighing mechanisms?

Magnitude (how big and how far it reaches), probability (how likely it is to actually happen), timeframe (how soon it lands), reversibility (whether the harm can be undone), and cost-benefit (whether the gain is worth what it costs).

Does dropping an argument mean you lose the round?

No. A dropped argument is usually treated as conceded, but conceded is not the same as important. An argument can be entirely unanswered and still carry very little weight — "dropped" and "well-supported" are two different axes, and a judge should weigh it honestly rather than automatically.

How much does delivery matter to a judge’s decision?

Delivery generally drives speaker points, while the decision itself should come off the flow. That said, an argument a judge cannot follow is an argument that cannot be weighed, so clarity and signposting affect the decision indirectly.

What makes evidence strong in a debate round?

Source quality, recency, and whether the evidence actually supports the claim being made with it. A confident citation attached to a claim it does not prove is weaker than a modest piece of evidence that genuinely warrants the point.

Can a judge vote on an argument the debaters never explained?

They should not. Judges are asked to evaluate the round the debaters actually had, not to fill in reasoning themselves — an argument asserted without a warrant is an argument the judge has no grounds to prefer.
