Debate Drills You Can Do on Your Own
Debate drills are short, repeatable exercises that build one skill at a time. Five that work alone: shadow a recorded round and answer it out loud, answer questions on a shrinking timer, give one-minute impromptu speeches, summarize a talk in a few sentences, and drill rebuttals under time pressure. Each takes about ten minutes.
Five drills, ten minutes each
1. Shadow a recorded round
Play a round and pause after each argument. Answer it out loud before you hear the real response, then compare. This trains listening and fast thinking.
2. Shrinking timer
Answer the same question in two minutes, then ninety seconds, then one minute. You learn what actually has to be said.
3. One-minute impromptu
Pick a topic at random, take thirty seconds to think and give a one-minute opening. It builds structure under pressure.
4. Summarize
Listen to a talk or a speech and give its main points in as few sentences as you can. It trains note-taking and flowing.
5. Rebuttal reps
Take an attack on your own argument and answer it in forty-five seconds. Repeat with a different attack each time.
Where the app fits in
- Rebuttal Drill gives you an attack on your argument and 45 seconds to answer, and shows a stronger answer after each try.
- Flow sheets let you flow a recorded round while you shadow it.
- The timer runs the speech or prep clock for your format.
- Speech Feedback marks up a speech you dictate, including pace and filler words.
- Practice Rounds give you an opponent that argues back when you want more than a drill.

Frequently asked questions
What are some good debate drills?
Shadow debating, shrinking-timer answers, one-minute impromptu speeches, summarizing a talk and timed rebuttal reps are all quick and work alone.
How often should I do drills?
A few short sessions a week beats one long one. Ten minutes on a single skill, repeated, moves faster than an hour of everything.
Do drills replace practice rounds?
No. Drills build one skill. Rounds put the skills together. Use drills to fix what a round shows you is weak.
