The rules that actually matter
- The student draws the prompt right before speaking. It is usually a quote, a word, or a short phrase.
- There is one 7-minute clock covering both thinking and speaking, and the student splits it however they like.
- Most use about 2 minutes to think and then speak for about 5. Using more or less thinking time is allowed, not a mistake.
- They should say early on what they think the prompt means and what their main point is.
- Two or three points, each with one good example, works better than one point stretched out.
- It helps to keep a set of examples in mind that could fit lots of different prompts.
- Judges score how it was organized, how creatively the prompt was handled, and how calm the speaker stayed.

How to prep for an Impromptu round
- Keep a set of go-to examples (history, books, science, your own life) that fit many prompts.
- Practice deciding fast what the prompt means to you and stating your main point early.
- Use two or three points with one good example each, rather than one point stretched out.
- Time yourself: try different splits of the 7-minute clock until you know what works for you.
How Impromptu rounds are judged
- Don’t penalize for lack of deep research — assess how well they reasoned and organized on the spot.
- Reward a clear structure created under real time pressure — intro, body, and conclusion all matter even at speed.
- The 7 minutes covers prep and speaking together and can be split however the speaker likes (most use just a minute or two to prep) — don’t dock them for using it unevenly.
- Score along three lines if your ballot supports it: Organization, Analysis (does it directly address the prompt?), and Delivery.
