Past versions of our policies
Effective 10/19/26 · Past versions
Each time our Privacy Policy or Terms of Service change in a way that matters, we publish a new version and list what changed here, newest first, so changes are never hidden. Earlier versions are kept in full below. Questions? Email thedebateprepsupport@gmail.com.
Current version: effective 10/19/26
- New version of the Terms of Service. Everything in the 10/16/26 version stays, with this addition:
- "Premium seats for teams": coaches can now also buy a yearly team package, one price for up to a set number of seats, where each seat gets the Premium features and a smaller monthly credit allowance. Packages renew once a year, credits still refill every month, cancelling takes effect at the end of the paid year, and switching packages is done by emailing us.
- Privacy Policy: unchanged, word for word. Only the effective date changed, so both pages share one date.
Read the current Privacy Policy or Terms of Service.
Earlier version: effective 10/16/26
- New version of the Privacy Policy. Everything in the 10/15/26 version stays, with this addition:
- "What we store": on a Free account, when you use the free weekly Practice Round, we save your time zone and which week you used it, so the next one unlocks on your own Monday. The parent email for accounts under 13 lists this too.
- Terms of Service: unchanged, word for word. Only the effective date changed, so both pages share one date.

The Debate Prep helps students practice debate. This page explains, in plain words, what we keep about you, who helps us run the site, and how to see, change or delete your data. We don't sell your data, and we don't show ads.
Who runs the site
thedebateprep.com is run by The Debate Prep, an independent project built by a competitive debater. You can reach us at thedebateprepsupport@gmail.com or through the contact page.
What we store
When you make an account and use the app, we save:
- Account details: your email address, name, school, grade level, debate format, whether you're a student, judge or both, and whether the account is for someone under 13. We ask for your birth month and year when you sign up, but we don't keep them.
- Your work: cases, introductions, plans and conclusions, flows, evidence cards and Evidence Finder searches, Refute Tables, speeches and their feedback, practice rounds, ballots, imported pairings, rubrics, and judge-training progress.
- Dictation and recordings: when you speak into the app, your browser turns your voice into text and we save only that text. We never upload or keep audio files. Your browser's own speech service handles the audio (Chrome uses Google's, and Safari uses Apple's).
- Teams: which teams you're on and your role, team names and join codes for coaches, assignments, which assignments you started work from, evidence cards added to a team's evidence library, who added each one, and a history of who added, edited or removed which card and when, and failed join-code tries (kept to slow down guessing). If a coach buys Premium seats: how many seats the team has, its billing period, and who has a seat.
- Use of coaching tools: which tool you used, when, and how many credits it cost, so we can keep your credit balance right. On a Free account, when you use your free weekly Practice Round, we also save your time zone and which week you used it, so the next one unlocks on your own Monday.
- A short record of how the app is used: for example that you signed up, opened the app, or looked at the pricing page. We keep this ourselves, use it only to see what's working in the app, and never share it. We don't use advertising or analytics companies.
- Emails we've sent you and your email choices, so we don't email you too often or after you unsubscribe.
- Billing (Premium only): your plan, its status, and the Stripe customer ID. We never see your card number.
- Messages you send us through the contact form, and the coaches form if you fill it in.
Some device preferences, like timer sounds, are kept only in your browser on that device.

Students and coaches
A coach can create a team after confirming they're 13 or older and coach or teach debate. Students join a team only by entering the coach's code and choosing to join on a screen that names the coach and lists what they'll see. Nobody can add a student to a team. While a student is on a team, the team's coach and any assistant coaches the coach adds can see:
- Your name and the debate format you picked, and when you last saved work.
- Your cases, including introductions, plans, conclusions and point-of-information and heckle prep.
- Your Refute Tables.
- Your speeches with their feedback and scores.
- Your practice rounds, including the judge’s decision.
- Your Evidence Finder searches.
- Comments on your cases, Refute Tables and searches, including ones from partners you shared them with.
- Whether you have a Premium seat the team pays for.
They can’t edit your work, and can’t see your email address, your school, your other settings, or your billing. Coaches can comment on a student's cases, Refute Tables and evidence searches. They can also assign a resolution to the team, and see which students started work from it. Students on a team can't see each other's work, and they see the names of their team's coaches. Students under 13 can't join a team (see below).
The one exception is the team's evidence library. Coaches, assistant coaches and students can each add evidence cards to it, and everyone on the team can see every card there and save their own copy. Nothing goes into it unless the person adding it chooses to, and the app says that the whole team will see it, with their name, before a student adds a card. Like comments on a shared item, each card shows the name on the account of whoever added it. The team can also see the library's history: who added, edited or removed which card, and when. A student can remove a card they added at any time, and coaches can remove any card.
A student can leave a team at any time in Settings → Teams, which ends the coaches' access straight away and takes the evidence cards that student added, and the history about them, out of the team's library. A coach can also remove a student (which does the same), or delete the team. Copies of a card that teammates already saved stay in their own libraries. Comments a coach left on a student's work stay on it, where the student can read or delete them. Settings always lists who can see your work.
Separately, a student can share a specific item with a partner, as described above. Students use their own credits on a team unless the head coach gives them a Premium seat, which makes them Premium while the coach pays. The team's coaches see who has a seat. They don't see a student's credit balance or what the credits were used on. The coach's payment goes through Stripe, like Premium; students' billing details aren't involved.
How we use it
- To run the app: save your work, sync it across your devices, and give you feedback when you ask for it.
- To keep your credit balance and Premium plan correct.
- To answer you when you contact us, to fix bugs, and to see which parts of the app are working.
Our commitments about student data
- We don't sell student data, or anyone's data, and we don't rent or trade it.
- We don't use it for targeted advertising. There are no ads on the site at all.
- We don't build profiles about you for anything other than running the app for you, like keeping your credits and showing your own progress.
- We delete it when you ask. Delete your account in Settings, or ask us (see "Your rights and requests" below).
- We protect it with reasonable security, described in the next section.
Security
- Everything between your browser and our site, and between our servers and the services above, is sent over encrypted connections (HTTPS).
- Our database provider encrypts the stored data on its disks.
- Every table in our database has access rules (row-level security), so your account can read only your own data and the items someone has shared with you.
- Only one account, the site owner’s, has administrator access. In the app it shows totals, like how many people signed up, and coach sign-up forms. It never shows your work. The owner can also reach the database through our hosting provider, and does that only to fix a problem or to handle a request from you.
No system is perfectly secure. If something ever goes wrong with your data, we'll tell you.
How long we keep it
We keep your account and your work for as long as your account exists. When you delete your account, we delete your work, your account details, and any messages or coach forms you sent us from our database straight away. Copies can stay in our hosting provider's encrypted backups for a short time after that, until those backups expire. Stripe keeps payment records it is legally required to keep.
We also delete some data on a schedule, because the app no longer needs it:
- Under 13, no parent approval: 14 days after sign-up, the account and the parent's email are deleted.
- Under 13, approved by a parent: if the account goes 12 months without being used, we delete it and all its data. Records of how they use the app are deleted after 12 months.
- Failed team join-code tries: after one day.
Deleting your account
Go to Settings → Account → Delete my account and type DELETE to confirm. That cancels any Premium plan, then removes your account and everything saved in it. It can't be undone. You can also ask us to do it (see below).
Your rights and requests
You, or a parent or guardian of a student under 18, can ask us to:
- see the data we hold about you, or get a copy of it;
- correct something that’s wrong (most of it you can also change yourself in the app);
- delete your account and its data.
Email thedebateprepsupport@gmail.com or use the contact page. We'll answer within 30 days. We may ask you to send the request from the email address on the account, so we know it's really you.
Children under 13
Students under 13 can use The Debate Prep only after a parent or guardian approves. When someone tells us they're under 13, we ask only for their first name and a parent's or guardian's email address, and we email the parent. The account can't save anything until the parent approves. If nobody approves within 14 days of signing up, we delete the account and the parent's email address.
The email tells the parent what we collect once they approve:
- Their email address and how they sign in (a password, or their Google or Microsoft account).
- Their name, school, grade level and debate format.
- The work they create: cases, speeches (as text), practice rounds, flows, evidence and searches.
- Feedback on that work, a record of which tools they used and the credits each one cost (and their time zone, when they use the free weekly Practice Round), and a short record of how they use the app (for example, when they signed up and opened it).
If they use the microphone to dictate, their web browser turns their voice into text using the browser maker’s own speech service (Google’s in Chrome, Apple’s in Safari). We never receive or keep the audio, only the text.
We use it only to run the app for the child. For accounts under 13:
- No advertising, and we never sell their data.
- No marketing or credit emails to them.
- They can’t share work with other people or join a coach’s team, so nobody else sees their work.
- Practice opponents use the basic browser voice, not an outside voice service.
- They can’t buy Premium.
These services receive a child's data, only to do these jobs for us:
- Supabase stores the account and their work, and runs our server.
- Vercel hosts the website, so it sees standard web request data like an IP address and browser type.
- Anthropic writes the feedback, from the text they send to a coaching tool (never their email address or school), and runs the web searches in Evidence Finder. Its terms say it won’t use this to train its models.
- Resend sends our emails to you: your email address, their first name and what the email says.
- Google or Microsoft, only if they choose to sign in with that account.
Information from a child under 13 is never shared with anyone beyond the service providers listed here, and never used for anything except running the app.
After a parent approves, we email them a confirmation with a way to undo it. The link in the parent's emails lets them see what the account holds and delete it, with all its data, at any time. A parent can also email thedebateprepsupport@gmail.com to get a full copy of the data, correct it, or stop us collecting more (which means deleting the account). We answer within 30 days. We never ask a child for more information than the app needs.
If you think a child under 13 is using an account without a parent's approval, tell us and we'll delete it.
Do Not Track
Some browsers can send a "Do Not Track" signal. We don't track you across other websites and we don't use advertising or analytics companies, so there's nothing for that signal to switch off: the site works the same whether or not your browser sends it.
Effective date and changes
This version takes effect on 10/16/26. If we change this policy in a way that matters, we'll change that date, list what changed on the past versions page, and show a notice in the app the next time you sign in.
Read the full Terms of Service as it was on 10/16/26
These terms are the agreement between you and The Debate Prep ("we") when you use thedebateprep.com. By making an account, you agree to them. Please also read our Privacy Policy.
Who runs the site
thedebateprep.com is run by The Debate Prep, an independent project built by a competitive debater. Contact us at thedebateprepsupport@gmail.com or through the contact page.
Who can use it
- Students under 13 need a parent's or guardian's approval. We ask your age when you sign up. If you're under 13, a parent or guardian approves by email before you can use the app, and some features are off (see the Privacy Policy). Tell us your real age.
- Coach accounts are for people 13 or older. To pick Coach as your account type, you confirm you're 13 or older and that you coach or teach debate.
- Use your own personal email address. Some student school email addresses can’t be used to sign up, so please use a personal email instead.
- Give us true information, including your real age and, if you’re under 13, a real parent’s or guardian’s email address. If you give us false information, you are responsible for what follows, and we may delete the account.
- Keep your password private. You are responsible for what happens on your account.
Credits
- Coaching tools use credits. New accounts get a starting amount, and free accounts get a smaller monthly amount after that. The current amounts are shown on the Upgrade page.
- If a coaching request fails, it costs no credits.
- Credits have no cash value and can’t be sold, transferred or refunded.
Premium subscriptions
- Renewal: Premium is billed monthly or yearly by Stripe, and renews automatically at the end of each period until you cancel. The price is shown before you pay.
- Cancelling: you can cancel at any time from Settings. Cancelling stops the next renewal.
- Price lock: if we raise the Premium price, the new price applies only to new subscriptions. While your subscription stays active on the same plan, it renews at the price you signed up at. If you cancel and it ends, or switch between monthly and yearly, the price at that time applies.
- At the end of the period: you keep Premium until the end of the period you paid for. Then your account moves to the free plan with its monthly credits. Unused Premium credits don't carry over. Your work stays in your account.
- Refunds: we don't offer refunds for partial periods, except where required by law.
- Failed payments: if a renewal payment fails, Stripe tries again. If it keeps failing, your account moves to the free plan.
Premium seats for teams
- Who pays: a team's head coach can buy Premium seats for the team, priced per seat each month. The coach pays, not the students. The price is shown before you pay. If you're under 18, get a parent's or guardian's permission before you buy anything, and use a payment card you're allowed to use.
- Giving seats: the head coach chooses which students on the team get a seat, and can take a seat back or move it to another student at any time. A student with a seat has Premium while the seat is theirs. A seat can't be given to a student who already pays for Premium, and a student with a seat who starts paying for Premium themselves gives the seat back.
- When a seat ends: if the seat is taken back, the student leaves the team, or the team's seats end, the student goes back to the free plan with the free credits they had before. Their work stays in their account.
- Renewal: billed monthly by Stripe, and renews automatically until the coach cancels. Each seat's credits refill every month. Unused credits don't carry over.
- Changing or cancelling: the head coach can change the number of seats or cancel at any time from the team's page. Added seats are charged straight away for the rest of the month. Removed seats, and cancelling, take effect at the end of the month already paid for. If more seats are given out than are kept, the most recently given ones are taken back then. A team can't be deleted while its seats are still being paid for.
- Refunds and failed payments: the same as Premium above. If payments keep failing, the team's seats end.
Your content
Your cases, speeches, flows and other work belong to you. You give us permission to store and process them only so we can run the app for you, including sending them to the services listed in the Privacy Policy when you use a coaching tool.
Automatically generated feedback and results
- Feedback, practice opponents and judges, Refute Tables and Evidence Finder results are generated automatically. They can be wrong.
- Always open and check a source yourself before you use it in a round.
- Treat feedback as practice advice, not a promise about how a judge will decide or how you will do.
- You are responsible for following your league’s and your school’s rules on academic honesty, including any rules about using tools like this one.
How the app fits NSDA's rules
The National Speech & Debate Association (NSDA) lets students use generative tools, like this app, to help with research and ideas. In debate events, its rules say you can't cite a generated answer as a source, and any evidence you quote or paraphrase in a round must trace back to an original source you can show on request. In Extemp, Original Oratory and Informative, you can't quote or paraphrase generated text at all. (NSDA's November 2025 rules minutes.)
What the app does, honestly:
- The Case Builder and weighing feedback comment on your own words. Their examples are about a different topic, and weighing comes as an outline with blanks for you to fill in, so the argument stays yours.
- Speech Feedback comments on your speech, and can suggest new wording for a sentence. That wording is generated, so put it in your own words before you use it in a round.
- Evidence Finder finds real sources and links to each one. Its short summaries are generated: open the source, read it, and cite the source, not the summary.
- Refute Tables, practice opponents and the rebuttal drill do write argument text. It’s practice material and a starting point for research, never something to read in a round.
Three rules for every round:
- Write your own case.
- Cite only the original source.
- Never read generated text in a round.
If your league, tournament or school has stricter rules, follow theirs.
Coaches and teams
These apply to coaches and assistant coaches on a team, and to anyone who views students' work through sharing:
- Only invite students who are on your own team.
- Don’t share students’ work, or anything you learn from it, with anyone outside the team.
- You are responsible for following your school’s or program’s rules when you recommend the app to students.
Fair use
Please don't:
- try to break, overload or get around the credit system, or access other people’s accounts;
- use the app to harass anyone or to create content that is illegal or hateful;
- copy, resell or scrape the app or its content.
We can suspend accounts that break these rules.
Ending your account
You can delete your account at any time in Settings. We may close accounts that break these terms. If we ever shut the service down, we'll give notice in the app first.
Parents and guardians
A parent or guardian who approves an account for a child under 13 agrees to these terms on the child's behalf, and is responsible for the child's use of the app. They can see the account or delete it at any time from the link in their email.
No guarantees, and limits on our responsibility
The app is provided "as is". We work to keep it running and your work safe, but we can't promise it will always be available or error-free.
As far as the law allows, we aren't responsible for:
- indirect losses, such as a lost round;
- what users write, share or do with the app, or how they use what it gives them;
- anything that results from someone giving us false information, such as a wrong age, or an email address that belongs to someone else or isn’t really a parent’s.
If you break these terms or the law while using the app, you agree to cover the reasonable costs that causes us, as far as the law allows. For a child under 13, that applies to the parent or guardian who approved the account.
Nothing in these terms limits rights you have under laws that can't be changed by agreement, or our own duties under those laws, such as privacy laws that protect children.
Governing law
These terms are governed by the laws of the State of California, USA.
Effective date and changes
These terms take effect on 10/16/26. If we change them in a way that matters, we'll change that date, list what changed on the past versions page, and show a notice in the app the next time you sign in.

Earlier version: effective 10/15/26
- New version of the Terms of Service. Everything in the 10/14/26 version stays, with this addition:
- "How the app fits NSDA’s rules": what the National Speech & Debate Association allows and doesn’t, which tools give feedback on your own words and which write text, and three rules for every round.
- Privacy Policy: unchanged, word for word. Only the effective date changed, so both pages share one date.

Sharing with a partner
You can share a case, Refute Table or evidence search with a partner. Only you decide to do that, and you choose what they can do: view it, comment and suggest changes for you to approve, or edit it. Nothing else in your account is shared. You can change someone's access or remove them at any time, and a partner can leave a shared item at any time.
- If you invite someone by email, we store that email address with the invite, so only that person can use it. The invite is emailed to them by us (through Resend, listed above), or from your own email app.
- Suggested changes are saved until you or an editor approve or reject them. Comments are saved with your name, and the owner, editors and commenters on the item can read them. Viewers can’t see comments. When a shared item is deleted, its invites, suggestions and comments are deleted with it.
- While a shared item is open, the people on it can see each other’s names, who else has it open, which box each person is in, where their cursor is, and the last few words they typed. This is live only and isn’t saved.

- see the data we hold about you, or get a copy of it;
- correct something that’s wrong (most of it you can also change yourself in the app);
- Feedback on that work, a record of which tools they used and the credits each one cost, and a short record of how they use the app (for example, when they signed up and opened it).
This version takes effect on 10/15/26. If we change this policy in a way that matters, we'll change that date, list what changed on the past versions page, and show a notice in the app the next time you sign in.
Read the full Terms of Service as it was on 10/15/26
These terms are the agreement between you and The Debate Prep ("we") when you use thedebateprep.com.
- try to break, overload or get around the credit system, or access other people’s accounts;
- use the app to harass anyone or to create content that is illegal or hateful;
- indirect losses, such as a lost round;
- what users write, share or do with the app, or how they use what it gives them;
- anything that results from someone giving us false information, such as a wrong age, or an email address that belongs to someone else or isn’t really a parent’s.
These terms take effect on 10/15/26. If we change them in a way that matters, we'll change that date, list what changed on the past versions page, and show a notice in the app the next time you sign in.

Earlier version: effective 10/14/26
- New version of the Privacy Policy. Everything in the 10/13/26 version stays, with these changes:
- "Students and coaches": students on a team can now add evidence cards to the team's evidence library. Everyone on the team sees those cards, the name of whoever added each one, and a history of who added, edited or removed which card. They can save a copy. Nothing else a student saves is shown to other students.
- "Students and coaches": when a student leaves a team or is removed, the cards they added and the history about them are taken out of the team library. Copies teammates already saved stay in their own libraries.
- "What we store": the Teams line now lists evidence cards in a team's library, who added each one, and the library's history.

Who helps us run the site
These companies process data for us, only to provide the parts of the site listed:
| Service | What it does for us | What it receives |
|---|---|---|
| SupabaseSupabase privacy policy | Database, sign-in, and the server that runs our coaching tools | Everything you save in the app, your email address, and sign-in records. Its own terms say it won't use this to train its models. |
| VercelVercel privacy notice | Hosts the website | Standard web request data, such as your IP address and browser type. |
| AnthropicAnthropic privacy policy | Writes instant feedback, practice-round speeches and judging, Refute Tables, and Evidence Finder results (including the web searches Evidence Finder runs) | The text you send to a coaching tool, such as a case, a speech transcript, a topic, a flow, or a tournament pairing you import. Never your email address. Its own terms say it won't use this to train its models. |
| ElevenLabsElevenLabs privacy policy | Reads practice-round opponent lines aloud, if you pick a character voice | The text of the opponent lines it reads, which can respond to your arguments. Never your own writing as you typed it, and never your voice. |
| ResendResend privacy policy | Sends our emails: sharing invites you ask us to send, a few account emails about your credits, parent approval emails for accounts under 13, and coach sign-up forms to us | Recipients' email addresses, the first name on the account, and what each email says (an invite includes your name and the title of what you shared; a coach form includes what the coach typed). |
| StripeStripe privacy policy | Payments for Premium | Your email and payment details. Card numbers go straight to Stripe; we never see or store them. |
| Google and MicrosoftGoogle privacy policyMicrosoft privacy statement | Only if you choose "Sign in with Google" or "Sign in with Microsoft" | Your name and email address from that account. |
If you import a Google Doc or Sheet by link, our server downloads that public document to read it. We don't use any advertising or tracking services.

- try to break, overload or get around the credit system, or access other people’s accounts;
- use the app to harass anyone or to create content that is illegal or hateful;
- indirect losses, such as a lost round;
- what users write, share or do with the app, or how they use what it gives them;
- anything that results from someone giving us false information, such as a wrong age, or an email address that belongs to someone else or isn’t really a parent’s.
These terms take effect on 10/14/26. If we change them in a way that matters, we'll change that date, list what changed on the past versions page, and show a notice in the app the next time you sign in.

Earlier version: effective 10/13/26
- New version of the Privacy Policy. Everything in the 10/12/26 version stays, with these additions:
- "How long we keep it": data we now delete on a schedule. Accounts for children under 13 are deleted after 12 months without use, records of how they use the app after 12 months, and failed team join-code tries after a day.
- "Children under 13": the services that receive a child’s data, and that it is never shared beyond them or used for anything except running the app.
- New version of the Terms of Service. Everything in the 10/12/26 version stays, word for word.

- Teams: which teams you're on and your role, team names and join codes for coaches, assignments, which assignments you started work from, and failed join-code tries (kept to slow down guessing). If a coach buys Premium seats: how many seats the team has, its billing period, and who has a seat.
- Use of coaching tools: which tool you used, when, and how many credits it cost, so we can keep your credit balance right.
A student can leave a team at any time in Settings → Teams, which ends the coaches' access straight away. A coach can also remove a student, or delete the team.
- see the data we hold about you, or get a copy of it;
- correct something that’s wrong (most of it you can also change yourself in the app);
- Feedback on that work, a record of which tools they used and the credits each one cost, and a short record of how they use the app (for example, when they signed up and opened it).
This version takes effect on 10/13/26. If we change this policy in a way that matters, we'll change that date, list what changed on the past versions page, and show a notice in the app the next time you sign in.
Read the full Terms of Service as it was on 10/13/26
These terms are the agreement between you and The Debate Prep ("we") when you use thedebateprep.com.

A student can leave a team at any time in Settings → Teams, which ends the coaches' access straight away. A coach can also remove a student, or delete the team.
- see the data we hold about you, or get a copy of it;
- correct something that’s wrong (most of it you can also change yourself in the app);
- Feedback on that work, a record of which tools they used and the credits each one cost, and a short record of how they use the app (for example, when they signed up and opened it).
This version takes effect on 10/12/26. If we change this policy in a way that matters, we'll change that date, list what changed on the past versions page, and show a notice in the app the next time you sign in.
Read the full Terms of Service as it was on 10/12/26
These terms are the agreement between you and The Debate Prep ("we") when you use thedebateprep.com.
- try to break, overload or get around the credit system, or access other people’s accounts;
- use the app to harass anyone or to create content that is illegal or hateful;
- indirect losses, such as a lost round;
- what users write, share or do with the app, or how they use what it gives them;
- anything that results from someone giving us false information, such as a wrong age, or an email address that belongs to someone else or isn’t really a parent’s.
These terms take effect on 10/12/26. If we change them in a way that matters, we'll change that date, list what changed on the past versions page, and show a notice in the app the next time you sign in.
